More cooking adventures
Jan. 17th, 2009 10:36 amBy adding a little sugar and grated cheddar to my usual bread recipe, I'm making cheese bread.
I have most of what I need for fried chicken, in both gear and ingredients, though I intend to pick up a few more things at the store today. In particular, I need some more large storage vessels for dredging and draining. The plan tonight is:
I bought everything I needed for curried chicken with peaches, and so I better find some time to make that sometime this weekend too.
But I also don't want to miss the grand opening of Cornish Pasty Company's second location, which is today. So I think I'll head there for lunch, get my stuff on the way back from there, and get started.

- Arrange the area around my stove to see if I have room for all three "zones": seasoning, frying, and draining, all in a line. My kitchen is much smaller than AB's.
- carving my chicken, which is four and a half pounds -- one pound larger than AB says is the average. That needs to soak in buttermilk overnight.

Jan. 17th, 2009 02:24 pmThe new Cornish Pasty Company location is so much larger than the old one. And brighter, too; not like a coal mine at all.
Ordering a Royale with Cheese, and enjoying a Guinness, why the hell not.
Incidentally, I tried some of the cheese bread before I left. It's not that different tasting from the cheeseless bread I've been baking. Either it's supposed to be subtle, or I need to add more cheese next time.

Jan. 17th, 2009 07:13 pmI didn't put my groceries away, because I thought I bought all dry ingredients.
Four hours later, I remembered I bought buttermilk.
umm... I put it in the fridge just now, and, well, at least I also have to buy shortening, so I can just re-buy this if it turns out sour.
Except I don't know what buttermilk tastes like to begin with.

Jan. 17th, 2009 09:46 pmI was going to go out tonight too, but I'm thinking of canceling that, too.
Just doesn't seem worth the effort.
My destination is a 3 mile bus ride plus 5 mile bike ride, or a $25 cab ride, in each direction. And the bus isn't available for the way home.
It's not like I'll get some kind of bonus points when I show up for having gone through that. Quite the opposite; everyone who spent $5 worth of gas on a 20-minute drive will be relaxed, they'll have better social skills than me, and they won't be at all worried about how they're getting home. They're in a position of power over carless people, though if I bring my bike, fewer of them will even have the option of helping me out.
Actually, the whole city is like that, isn't it. Spending eight years living the Tempe life has fooled me into thinking I could tolerate living here. Maybe it's time for me to take more seriously the option of getting the hell out. Otherwise this will be the rest of my life.
