I was going to go out tonight too, but I'm thinking of canceling that, too.

Just doesn't seem worth the effort.

My destination is a 3 mile bus ride plus 5 mile bike ride, or a $25 cab ride, in each direction. And the bus isn't available for the way home.

It's not like I'll get some kind of bonus points when I show up for having gone through that. Quite the opposite; everyone who spent $5 worth of gas on a 20-minute drive will be relaxed, they'll have better social skills than me, and they won't be at all worried about how they're getting home. They're in a position of power over carless people, though if I bring my bike, fewer of them will even have the option of helping me out.

Actually, the whole city is like that, isn't it. Spending eight years living the Tempe life has fooled me into thinking I could tolerate living here. Maybe it's time for me to take more seriously the option of getting the hell out. Otherwise this will be the rest of my life.

You're over thinking this, man.
Quantifying everyone's position and status like this is some kind of game too.
You'll either go or won't, have a good time or won't. It's really that simple and all this thinking does nothing to change the situation but f#ck your brain to a little puddle of mush, which doesn't really let you appreciate anything.
Relax, breathe, have a good time :)

I'd bike all the way - hate to rely on the kindness of others, and self-reliance is fairly attractive. Plus, riding is a great excuse not to drink, which means staying more focused and in control. Dunno about Tempe, but in Warsaw being a year-round cyclist gives you all sorts of conversation starters... and coolness points for surviving in traffic ;)

you're right about self-reliance being attractive, though.

By contrast, sitting/pacing in the IHOP reception area while everyone else leaves in their cars, that's unattractive.

Same thing happened on prom night.
