Someone on NPR just said that one fiber of asbestos in your lungs does cause lung cancer. Not 'can' or 'might' but 'does'. So how come the whole human race hasn't died off yet?
You do realize that that person is smoking crack, right??
If that were absolutely 100% correct, we'd all be dead by now.
Most of the older schools have abestos in the ceilings. It was a quite popular insulatiopn and fire retardent matieral in the 70's.
I could understand repeated exposure. but one fiber? That's loony.
It could also depend on his definition of 'cancer'. the Cancer that the large majority of the world uses is defined as a large mass of mutant cells that is leeching away ones life.
Technically, cancer could be defined as one cell. so, in essance, everyone has cancer, because we all have at least one cell that has mutated in an unpleasent manner. Granted, 99% of these are killed without of realizing it, but it still make one wonder about some experts....
I can guarantee I've been exposed to more than one fiber of asbestos, as the main building at my old high school was in the process of asbestos removal while I was attending.
the statement may be incomplete, but there must be some reasonable interpretation of it (a single fiber in a certain location, or held for a particular duration) that's correct if the Asbestos Institute finds it necessary to go out of its way to make such a vague statement to debunk it.
