Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] jecook, my computer is up... kinda.

Windows 2000 doesn't like having the motherboard yanked from underneath it, so I'm reinstalling everything.

[hardware advice solicitation removed, as I figured it out.]

Well, after getting my drive letters re-arranged the way I like them, most things have started working again on their own. I even rescued all my home videos from my second hard drive.

I'd probably still be messing with it if [livejournal.com profile] jecook hadn't not only done the hardware swap for me, but also run that memory tester that found all that bad memory.

There's a game for two players, where you take turns picking numbers from 1 to 9. Each number can only be picked once. A player wins by selecting three numbers that add up to 15. It looks hard to master, until you build a map of numbers like this:
672
159
834
Then the game becomes identical to tic-tac-toe.

I'd like to make a game with identical rules to poker, but with the rules similarly munged beyond recognition. Perhaps they're explained in a story context.

How much game theory am I going to have to learn?

PBS has been running "Do You Speak American?", a documentary series about regional dialects in the U.S. I hope I didn't miss too much of it -- I may end up buying the DVD set to make sure I have the whole thing.

This morning, TiVo caught the episode that dealt with the southern U.S., with soundings from country singers, Jeff Foxworthy, and several Presidents. The next episode should deal with my neighborhood -- the West Coast and the parts of the Southwest that lead to it.
