- London: Mar 21-Mar 24: Hang out with London Kibologists, see touristy things, and so forth, and speak English with impugnity. Get my travel skills up to snuff.
- France: Mar 24-Mar 30: I haven't decided how to divide time between Paris and non-Paris. Perhaps I'll spend a little time in Alsace before heading to...
- Brussels, Belgium: Mar 31-Apr 2: Yes, this trip is certainly taking a turn for the urban. This city will hopefully augment my French-speaking portion of the trip outside of tourist-jaded Paris. And maybe I'll have a day trip in there somewhere.
- Luxembourg: Apr 3: I might stretch this into an extra day, or I might make this a day trip so as to save a railpass day. Would be a shame, as I do have a friend here, and free pizza, and I can't miss a tour of the Maginot Line.
- Netherlands: Apr 4-Apr 7: Yes, I'm going to Amsterdam. I'll see about a day trip to the countryside here too. No luck finding out whether family research would do any good here.
- Germany: Apr 8-Apr 13: Just Germany. Hamburg first, and the only thing I know I can't miss there is St. Catherine's Cathedral, where there is some family history. Then Berlin. Again, I'll aim for some day trips, and try the beer.
- Prague: Apr 13-Apr 15: I'm wondering if I should allocate more days to this city, considering how cheap it is, especially compared with Germany. And I hear it's easier to find Esperantists there than in any of the preceding countries.
- Frankfurt: Apr 16-Apr 17: They say there's nothing to do in Frankfurt. That's fine with me; I've got to rest up from my days in Prague and for my flight back home, which will stretch the middle four hours of April 17 into twelve hours.
Uhhhh... that's all I have so far. Not bad, eh?

Frankfurt am Main
Date: 2002-03-12 11:33 am (UTC)This looks like a Very Good Itinerary to me. One small change I would probably make if it were mine is to go to Luxembourg after Netherlands, and see Germany starting with the Saarland and Rheinpfalz. Absolutely beautiful country. On the other hand, I've never seen northern Germany at all, so who am I to knock Hamburg? They do have cool accents up there. There was a Hamburger conductor on a train I took from Speyer to Mainz, and the way he said "Maaaaargen" just made you feel so good, like running into a friendly Geordie in a dingy London neighborhood.
In Berlin, don't make my mistake and think you'll eventually get around to trying the Berliner Weisse (half-fermented wheat beer). Be sure to try both the green and the red. And find somebody with a good enough botanical dictionary to tell you what's in the green, because I've forgotten already. And don't fall into the clutches of the shell-game operators while you do it.
Aside from that, ignore any advertisements for beer in Germany. They'll all tell you to drink Jaeger Pils and Bitburger(Ein Bit, bitte!), which are like the Coors and Rolling Rock of Germany. Look for local Hefe-weizen and Altbiers instead.
