I checked out the first three episodes of "The Adventures of Brisco County Jr" on Netflix. It was a western series that aired on the Fox network in 1993, starring Bruce Campbell in the title role as a ridiculously competent Harvard lawyer turned bounty hunter, a renaissance man for the old West. His adopted lifestyle seems incongruent with his quest for the "coming thing", something the 20th century will surprise humanity with.

And his horse doesn't know he's a horse. And he helps Gomez Addams improve the design of a rocket. And, there's an orb that gives you superpowers.

It's got a high cheese factor when compared to other Westerns, if for no other reason than the occasional infusion of science fiction. But it has a low cheese factor when compared to Campbell's films.

It looks good enough to have lasted longer than it did. Fox has been shafting good shows since long before Firefly, and this is one of the shows that trained me to start taping everything I watched in college. Apparently the show premiered on the same night as the X-Files. And I remember watching this show every week, but never got into the X-Files. And it was years before I learned anything else about Bruce Campbell. I tend to take strange wrong turns in fandom; can you tell?

Add this to your Netflix queue. The pilot alone makes it worth the slot.

"Brisco County, Jr." was a good, fun show--obviously inspired by "The Wild Wild West", and far better than the Will Smith movie adaptation thereof. It definitely deserved to live longer.

"And his horse doesn't know he's a horse."

It took me a second to parse that. For a moment I was literally thinking "What the...? He's a lawyer AND a bounty hunter AND A HORSE? A horse who has ANOTHER horse?"

I used to love that show when it was airing, but I was a lot younger, and have been wondering how much I'd like it now. Perhaps I'll rent it sometime.

I think it holds up. You definitely won't get the same shock you get when Saved by the Bell comes on.

Oh I can imagine. I figure anything with Bruce Campbell will keep me entertained, no matter how old I am.
