yesterday: I got a bathroom scale and new cast-iron skillet in the mail yesterday. went swing dancing with [livejournal.com profile] tamtrible. I think she's good luck; women seem more approachable when I'm with someone, and she also encouraged me to go out and dance a little more instead of going home.

Speaking of dancing, here's what reddit.com calls the next great Internet dance craze. Get down!

I went salsa dancing again, in lieu of attending any swing events today. I'll explain later.

I met two Asian girls during the lesson: a Japanese national whom I totally impressed by saying a single Japanese sentence, ooh, and an American of indeterminate Asian descent, who thanked me profusely after the lesson. I couldn't find either of them when the lesson was over, though. I must take care not to confuse them, but I don't think I will.

The instructor's approach to following was completely different. The salsa teacher tells the follows that the leads cannot make a mistake; it's the follow's job to, well, follow. But, at the same time, she taught the follows a lot of styling, a lot of brush-the-hair and raise-the-arm kind of stuff with the arms and the body curves and whatnot. In swing, the styling is usually done with some tricky footwork.

I still haven't really gotten the nerve to dance socially. Well, I have asked a few women to dance, but they declined. I have the feeling that the salsa dancing scene is a little less suited to shy people.

On the bus last night, on my way to the salsa dancing class, there was this guy who sounded exactly like Jason Mewes, and looked sort of like him. And then I heard him talking to this other guy, and overheard "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back"... and then he started describing scenes with Siamese twins and such. "Is Jason Mewes trolling this bus?" I thought.

When his friend got off the bus, I told him "You look familiar. What's your name?" When he said "Phil", I admitted that I thought he looked like Jay. He said he gets that a lot, and that he ends up looking like a lot of people, and as he said that, he started to look and sound a little more like Nicolas Cage, which I mentioned to him also. He's one of the Mr. Potato Head people; his face has interchangeable parts. I mean, the links are right there, compare the headshots. I wish I'd brought my camera so I could take pictures and prove it.

He was the first of a string of cool people I met that night. There was the waitress at Bash on Ash who asked if that empty cup was mine while I was trimming my nails, and asked to borrow my clipper. And there were all the people I met while learning to salsa dance. And the bicycle-rickshaw driver whom I voluntarily paid $4 for a one-mile ride to Dairy Queen afterwards.

Was it just a coincidence that I met all these people, or were my eyes just open in a way they usually aren't? Either way, it's good to find good people.
