Jul. 15th, 2006 12:31 pmAs children, we are helpless. And what happens to helpless people in this world? They get recruited to things. Remember that cute little kid who knew all the presidents' names when he was two? Well, by the time he was twelve, he still appeared regularly on TV, but as a Watergate denier.
That's why people really write children's books. It's not just that they get to make money off twelve sentences of work. Once I realized that, children's products I saw started getting creepier and creepier.
Sometimes there are outright ideological battles. Now it's spread to the copyright issue. Big media has Captain Copyright, while the pirates have Pig and the Box.
Your class assignment: pick something that children are too young to have to worry about, and pitch me some propoganda that might get them to think the way you do about it. Like the flat tax, gun control, the death penalty, or salary caps for professional athletes.

Date: 2006-07-16 12:11 am (UTC)In ther mid90s I remember talking with a young girl, and we drove past where they were clearing some trees to put a house, and she immediately labeled them as bad, from a "Captain Planet" lesson... I tried to argue the other side, like how people need a place to live maybe, and she just wasn't getting it.
