Does booze really talk on its own?
i.e. If someone says something dumb when drunk, do you believe that it should be disregarded as ill-thought-out, or do you believe that it is a revealing look into the drunk one's true soul?

Date: 2005-07-05 03:32 pm (UTC)When sober, most of us are usually able to encounter such thoughts and determine that they're dumb, and prevent ourselves from saying them out loud. This capability to self-edit is somewhat diminished when we're drunkened.

Date: 2005-07-05 10:13 pm (UTC)My friend with the reversible fronto-temporal dementia has been having mild episodes again recently and is going back to the hospital this week for a "blood patch" to try to stop the loss of cerebrospinal fluid. It was quite entertaining being at a party after a performance with him last week and hearing him talk about the loss of his sense of appropriateness and then two minutes later start asking totally inappropriate questions of someone we were all intensely curious about. Until he went way, way over the line, it was pretty hard to tell that he was seriously impaired and not just joking around.

Date: 2005-07-05 06:51 pm (UTC)Anyway, one tidbit I think I remember from a "World Civ" class is that some group, maybe even the Romans, but maybe not, required decisions to be confirmed twice: once while sober, once while drunk.
