Electronics companies can't be counted on to provide fun for much longer. But it's getting too hot to go hiking anymore.

Anyone have any favorite indoor activities that don't involve a TV-like device?

At home: Reading, doodling (no way in hell I can call it drawing without laughing at myself), cooking, doing hobby kits from amazing1.com, inviting friends over for barbecue and wine.

Out and about: Window shopping, dining out, writing at coffee shops on yellow legal pads (the more furiously the better, as far as getting complete strangers to come up ask you what you're doing), going to movies, watching some obscure yet promising band at local bar, or my complete and personal favorite: sitting around with friends and shooting the breeze for hours on end.

Art is a great indoor hobby. Watercolors and Gouache are cheap to initially invest in, and easy to work with. I'd stay away from Oils because they take forever to dry, and very messy. It's also smelly and accidental spills are impossible to get out of clothes, carpets and upholstery.

Cross-stitch and Embroidery is another good hobby, but knowing your eyesight, I dont think it'd be right for you.

My view is that even though there aren't a lot of new games worth playing, there are gobs of enjoyable old games I didn't have the time or money to investigate at the time of their debut. I spend about a half-hour sorting through PSone games whenever I hit the game store.

But getting back to your question, I find any activity that leaves a visible effect feels quite rewarding. Some good examples: cleaning, lawn-mowing, and shelving library books.
