My company wants me to learn mod_perl, in addition to Java.

Do I learn perl first, then the mod_perl extension? Or can I learn the whole thing in one fell swoop?

Mod_perl is an Apache plugin, but you probably knew that already. It's basically a perl intrpreter for Apache, so that httpd does not have to inv0oke perl for each page that requires it.

One thinks that with knowledge of perl would come mod_perl. Ther emight be some specific dangly bits that is spefic to mod_perl that I'm not aware of. I'm just a power user, after all...

I suspect some pointy-headedness is at play here, as I suspect it'd be easier to use Java for the entire thing.

Dunno about that. Java web apps tend to be more robust, but for quick 'n' dirty dynamic sites it's hard to beat mod_perl.

Perl's a good skill to have. Language-wise mod_perl is just Perl in a different environment.

Right. If you use 'mod_perl', you're using perl, in a particular environment. But the language is perl, and the syntax is perl.
