So, rumor has it that bananas are going to go extinct. They're too inbred, and now they can't fight these new diseases out there.
I've never seen a popular fruit go extinct before. I wonder what it'll be like. Will bananas start becoming more and more expensive, eventually only available at fine restaurants? You wouldn't know that now; they're dirt cheap in some places.
Many products already include artificial banana flavor, so the flavor will still be around. But they can never replace the banana as the perfect primate food. Bananas have a peel that serves as a natural wrapper, keeping the food clean on the inside, and keeping the hand clean on the outside. And the peel has a very important place in out culture; what will become our new default slipping object?
And, of course, no seeds to separate, pit, or spit out. Hence the trouble.
If we do save the banana, it might be from genetic engineering. And while we're at it, I wonder what else we could do to it. Make it taste like apples, for example.
