In Esperanto, "homo" is the generic term for "person" or "human". It's a very common word.

I just got used to that when I found out "fagoto" means "bassoon".

What a country!

He-y. What possibilities of insulting! "You're a bassoon. An ignorant bassoon who'll never learn Esperanto to find out what I've just called you."

William Dean Howells, who was a Great Man of American Literature in the 1890s and is now quite obscure, wrote a series of letters in various literary magazines from the point of view of a visitor from the land of Altruria, where everyone is altruistic and socialist; he visits Central Park and the World's Columbian Exposition, and talks about how Altruria is so much better.
The name of this narrator: Aristides Homos.
