Nov. 23rd, 2002 11:10 amSpock's World, by Diane Duane. I got it for my birthday once and never got around to reading it.
But I think I called a BBS that the author once called. A BBS called Catalyst. I think it only had four active users, maybe one or two more. There was myself, the Sysop, a teenager probably named Scott who named his zits, and Diane Duane. That's a name that's easy to remember. Perhaps her husband called the board as well.
I don't remember whether this happened before or after the book. I don't even remember whether I called the BBS with my Atari, in the 80's, or with my Commodore, in the 90's. I only remember that at one point I had this hacked-together terminal program for it which used a speech synthesizer. And though there were so few callers, we all called every day for a short while.
The Spock's World book on tape is airing on a Shoutcast station, and I've found that in it, the Enterprise has a BBS. She even calls it that.
I exchanged zit jokes with a woman who made George Takei say "Uranus" in the next chapter.
