unbibiumSometimes talented musicians can make big mistakes.
Listen to Great Giana Sisters by machinae supremacy. It's a video game remix tune, much like the Minibosses are famous for. And, for the most part, it's a very powerful arrangement. Excellent guitar work, and just a hint of original SID and synth in the background to give it a little texture.
Except... well, they spend the first 50 seconds of the song jerking us off. They play little fuzzy two-second clips of other SIDs mixed in with television-static-ish transitions, and then all the static goes away and it plays the straight Commodore-64-generated song for a few measures. And then in the middle of one of the measures this background scream swells and then it SWITCHES to the NEW ROCKIN' VERSSION! It seems to inadvertently humiliate the original version, as if to say "Hey, nostalgia junkie! This song was pretty good... FOR 1986! I bet this is what you WISH it could sound like!"
After repeating the title theme a couple of times, it switches to the level music, a familiar reggae-ish tune that serves as a nice contrast after all that embellished shredding speed-soloing. The level music is my favorite part of this remix, in no small part because I'm a sucker for Boston-style harmonized guitars The problem is, this part of the song is too short. It stops in the middle, even. This is extremely frustrating, considering the level music is the tune we're used to listening to over and over for hours on end; why did it repeat the title music twice, but stop in the middle of the level music?
I don't know. I suppose machinae supremacy has a different vision of video game remixes than I have.
