I could see how Civilization might be more addictive; the terms are more familiar so the learning curve will be shorter. Alpha Centauri is so full of technobabble, it'd probably take months of playing in lieu of bathing or working to reach proficiency.
I know people who have played Civilization-like games all weekend and then asked their roommates to hide the game.
Civ I'm more familiar with - I had that game about 10 years ago (b&w, 4 disks to repeatedly fiddle around with on a dinosaur Mac - time-consuming, but it was fun, even so). It was definitely a procrastination outlet of mine for periods here and there.
I've got Civ II now, but haven't played it in ages...
I'm avoiding purchasing Civ 3 because I know I'll get all sucked into it. I'd rather play something like Starcraft, or something else that I can play over the 'net... that way, even as I wither away in my apartment, I'm at least being social.
But then I won't have time for swing dancing or ice skating....
But, there's no danger of that happening to me. Me and Dierdre were kicking the Human Hive's ass, capturing bases left and right, when the game crashed and I lost three hours of gameplay. That sort of thing snaps me out of game addiction right quick. That's why I don't have Linux.
Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri?

Wouldn't surprise me!
