I'm glad I never bet in a social setting. And I don't mean taking money
from friends, or losing money to friends, or even tricking friends with
shady proposition bets. But I mean bets with stakes where nobody wins
anything, but the loser has to do something humiliating. Like, the loser
has to shave his head, or whatever. I never understood the mentality behind
that.

Malcolm Gladwell's book "Outliers" is the latest to reepeat to me the
idea that to truly master something, you need to practice for 10,000
hours. You may be competent quickly, but not yet a master. And people
we think of as prodigies are merely people who got their 10,000 in
before anyone else.

Do any of you have 10,000 hours in anything?

Is it the right thing?
