They're going to sell a gazillion toys. Enough to fill three landfills. And I think it'll be worth it.
I found myself surprised at how sympathetic the humans were. There were no human villains on the screen, not even Fred Willard. I guess it's no longer clever to be cynical about human nature, or fat American consumer nature, although you could say the villains were all in the audience, carrying bags of merchandise from throughout the mall.
It's some pretty good science fiction, although they never explain how those cruise ships sustain themselves if they're dumping that much stuff out the airlock. I figured there'd be more recycling there, or at least some hand-wave about space mining. An important part of the green message is that resources have a finite supply.
If you ever design a robot that cleans up garbage, it's a good idea to program it to nurture any surviving life forms, and also have it maintain an archaeological archive of stuff.
The movie was very emotionally charged for a film about robots. I almost teared up a few times.
