My smoke alarm just made a brief, startling, loud noise.

It hasn't repeated the noise, but I suspect it may be warming up for a long, annoying low battery warning.

I do have batteries. What I do not have is a 12-foot ladder to get to my ceiling.

The smoke alarm just whined again. Elapsed time, maybe 70 minutes.

Incidentally, I can't even get close enough to it to see whether there's a button.

If I stand on a chair with a broom, I can touch it, but I can't seem to dislodge it or manipulate anything specific.
