Hey Hollywood, am I bent over far enough?
Jan. 3rd, 2005 08:16 pmWell, TiVo activated that feature where you can watch recorded shows on a networked PC.
Sounds cool, eh?
Well, it's ridiculous to set up. You need to think up a password to lock your shows down, so nobody else can download them. Also, the installer doesn't install the codecs for you; you have to go to Sourceforge and download them separately. And after all that, it didn't work right away. After digging around online, I learned that I have to log in at TiVo's website and click on a check box. It's in "DVR Preferences", and NOT "Activate or Upgrade TiVo service".
And I still haven't gotten it working.
Of course, it's still better than what the cable companies are offering. But still, it seems pretty cheap to me.
Also, all the DRM pisses me off. You shouldn't need a fucking password to watch TV. Not unless you're a parent of young chlidren who leaves a lot of porn lying around. And, come to think of it, none of my porn on my PC has a password on it. It'll be a moot point soon, as Hollywood is likely to use this as leverage to take away our ability to skip commercials.
