At the renaissance festival, I found a storefront that was selling coin medallions. There was a guy with a sledgehammer out front striking the coin.

Their designs were limited, though. I wanted:

1. an antipenny, or negative one cent coin.
2. an R-pentomino, the shape from which I derive my LJ name. A pattern in John Conway's Life which expands into a much more complicated pattern.
3. Pac-Man. Because I'm a classic video game geek, I like food, and everyone who sees it will recognize it.

They had various religious/spiritual symbols, animal spirit symbols (no tigers, Jeremy!) and signs of the Zodiac.

I got to watch the Joust and actually see what was going on, thanks to my great-grandfather's binoculars. Same with the Ded Bob Sho, and various and sundry novelty acts that peppered the festival.

I learned from people who have attended the festival repeatedly that the jousts and the Ded Bob Sho are, in general, identical from year to year. I suppose this means I can save time by going to the falconer's show next year, and not standing in the wings through a half-hour of Ded Bob, and this means I can explore the other curiosities that the festival have to offer.

And when I've seen all the shows, I can spend time flirting with cashiers and bullshitting with people in interesting costumes.

I have the telephone number to one of the pay phones outside the gates at the renaissance festival.

The phone accepts incoming calls. And in keeping with the festival's out-of-this-century motif, it actually rings with a bell rather with cheap electronic beabling.

I'm going to call it tomorrow from the comfort of my own home. "Hast thou Prince Albert in a can? Then by the grace of God, free His Highness forthwith!"
