Jan. 13th, 2002 10:43 pmI went salsa dancing again, in lieu of attending any swing events today. I'll explain later.
I met two Asian girls during the lesson: a Japanese national whom I totally impressed by saying a single Japanese sentence, ooh, and an American of indeterminate Asian descent, who thanked me profusely after the lesson. I couldn't find either of them when the lesson was over, though. I must take care not to confuse them, but I don't think I will.
The instructor's approach to following was completely different. The salsa teacher tells the follows that the leads cannot make a mistake; it's the follow's job to, well, follow. But, at the same time, she taught the follows a lot of styling, a lot of brush-the-hair and raise-the-arm kind of stuff with the arms and the body curves and whatnot. In swing, the styling is usually done with some tricky footwork.
I still haven't really gotten the nerve to dance socially. Well, I have asked a few women to dance, but they declined. I have the feeling that the salsa dancing scene is a little less suited to shy people.
