Racing against people you actually know is way too awkward anyway because of the whole friend-code system, and because somebody who likes Mario Kart in the first place isn't likely to be spending gigantic amounts of time connected to WFC, so you usually have to arrange things in advance.
That leaves racing against strangers, and though this is really slickly done, it seems like even with the skill matching, there's such a range of skills (possibly distorted by cheating?) that most contests are really lopsided. Either I'm racing against a bunch of chumps, or I'm one of the chumps. Also, most of the people I know in real life are bad enough at the game that they don't actually like playing with me.
This is interesting to me since most reviews of the game say that the item system is designed to give rotten players a fighting chance, and some even complain that it removes the game's whole skill element. It's the conventional wisdom, but as far as I can tell this is not actually true.
