I just saw a commercial for Plan B, the emergency contraceptive.

It's on the E! network, and it aired during The Souop's "Chicks Man, Part 2" special, which showcased shows like Paris' BFF, The Hills, The View, et al. And apparently you don't need a prescription for it if you're over 18.

This is perhaps the first time I've even seen it mentioned on TV outside some kind of news report talking about how controversial it is, and how hard it is to get, and how inflexible fundamentalist leaders are on the issue. The commercial was an overwhelmingly positive message this time, and it said loud and clear that it does not terminate an existing pregnancy, and will not work if you're already pregnant. The implication is clear that pregnancy starts a few days after copulation, and I hope that message gets out.

I support the goal of "Plan B" but am mildly miffed that I don't feel comfortable saying phrases like "we need to make sure we have a Plan B if this doesn't work out" any more.

When he parted ways with his buddies, Jeffrey Ross used to say "stay free," and it was a cool thing to say. Then one day, overnight, it became a maxi pad. He and his friends stopped saying it.

I would say not to worry, because birth control pills of all kinds are collectively known as "the pill", to the point where if you say "the pill", everyone knows which pill you're talking about. Except "the pill" was a nickname, and "Plan B" is a registered trademark.

That last gets to the heart of the issue, doesn't it? It took me a surprisingly long time to realize that so many people defined "the moment of conception" as the moment the sperm goes into the woman.
