So what's the best way to get Canadian dollars out of my Chase checking account? I neglected to cash up at an ATM before going through the checkpoint. The exchange desk at the airport was buying US$ at CAN$1.09 and selling at CAN$1.27, and something tells me I can do better than 8% commission if I go to the right place once I land.

US Airways Flight 506 leaves in an hour and a half. And it looks like my slacks are coffee-stain-resistant.

If you have one of the Visa or Mastercard branded ATM cards (and these days, who doesn't) and you need cash, I have found the easiest way to do it is go to a grocery store and buy something small such as a pack of gum or a bottle of water. Pay with the ATM card and get cash back. You can't do big withdrawals easily this way (but why would you want to when you're traveling internationally?), but when you're done you aren't paying as much as an ATM fee, and you get something you were in the mood for anyway.

If the hotel you are staying at is fancy enough, they should be able to exchange US dollars for Canadian dollars.

You could pay for almost everything with a credit card. It is not like you are in a country where there is a lot of corruption. For things you cannot pay for with credit card, make a withdraw at a nearby ATM.
