So, "Tropic Thunder" is getting heat from disability advocates for "using the R-word" and picking on the mentally handicapped.

From what I know of the "Simple Jack" thing, it seems the whole point of that is to point out how many actors get critical acclaim, and sometimes an Oscar, by playing 'tarded, which advocacy groups don't seem to mind at all.

I just hope they don't end up editing the movie around it as a result.

A friend won't see it because of Downey Jr.'s blackface performance. Me, i probably won't see it because it looks pretty damn stupid.

The advocacy group released a statement saying no edits were made.
I'm glad. The movie is clearly making fun of actors, as you pointed out, rather than making fun of those with disabilities.
People need to chill the fuck out.
