The first time I saw the trailer for "The Love Guru" in theaters, it looked pretty funny.

Then I saw the commercials on TV. It seemed to dwell too much on dwarf tossing and the creepy CGI teenaged Mike Myers.

Then the commercials on TV doubled down on the Vern Troyer slapstick and the CGI, adding the "A chastity belt? That sucks!" for no discernable reason. It added the "what is it you cun't face" super-pun, too, as if we weren't convinced it was a comedy.

Then the radio ads came out. And it, too, focused largely on the slapstick, though in radio play format. The last time I saw a trailer so specifically but awkwardly adapted to radio, it was Norbit.

I'm staying far away. Deep Hurting lies here.

The first time I saw the trailer was when I saw Wayne's World, So I Married an Axe Murderer, and Austion Powers. The Love Guru looks like all recycled jokes. I used to love Mike Myers, but he hasn't done anything new or worthwhile in a long time.

I wouldn't go that far, but I will say that the Love Guru sounds like Myers trying to come up with a movie pitch that gave the best excuse for lots of crude humor. And he's too old to do Wayne's World anymore (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Dfx-09i4H2E).

Mike Myers was interviewed on "Fresh Air" the other day; didn't listen to the interview, just the introduction, which said he had been developing the character "for years".

Oddly, in the list of his previous work, Shrek wasn't mentioned.

I know he's been developing this character for at least *one* year, because the first time I'd heard of the movie was a year ago, when I saw Mike Meyers and Deepak Chopra on an episode of Iconoclasts, the interview show on Sundance about unusual pairings of celebrities and what they learn from each other. Turns out Mike Meyers spent a lot of time with Deepak Chopra to prepare for this movie.

In interviews, Myers seems to sell it as being primarily about pop culture gurus, even though all other press seems to make it about sophomoric humor. Apparently the character used to be a stage show, or something.
