got a Mac

I just bought an iMac, and I'm carrying it home on the bus.

Why a Mac when PC's are cheaper? Better OS, and I'm tired of building my own and upgrading piece by piece. Games aren't a huge priority, except Spore, which has a Mac version.

Why an iMac instead of a Mac Mini? My big 19-inch CRT is getting a little blurry. Still good for TV shows but not much else.

Why a new computer at all? I wanna code, and do video. And dabbling in Mac programming may be good for my career.

If I'd kept up on all the new hardware standards, I'd do what [livejournal.com profile] jecook is doing and build my own custom PC from scratch, and make it look really cool. But I haven't, so I have to buy something I didn't build, that already looks cool to start with.

I occasionally toy with the idea of a Mac. But fuck, I hate Mac's brand positioning with such fury. And I have to say the big Mac Pros are built like brick shithouses. I just wish they had a less cutesy interface. The coolest desktop I've seen is certainly the PCLinuxOS. Unfortunately, that distro hates my frankencomputer. Mandriva Linux is also pretty cool, and less glitchy.

Outside of the office tools and graphics programs, though, I don't really like the Linux applications. Especially the audio editing. I absolutely love my Cakewalk stuff, and none of the Linux audio stuff comes anywhere near it.

Office tools and graphics programs? Like OpenOffice and GIMP?

One reason I never swutch to Linux is because, just about any program you could run on Linux, you could download for Mac or PC.

Yup. By used AbiWord rather than OpenOffice. Of course, Google will give you StarOffice free, which I like better than either (hey, I write for a living - good office software is a must!).

As for Gimp, pretty good stuff. I found both Abi and Gimp work better using a Linux OS. Don't know why, but it's true. Ditto that for Firefox.

We do have the Mac exclusive programs Logic Express and Logic Studio... I know a couple of other musicians who use it.

Congratulations on getting the Mac! Welcome to the fold. You should be getting your welcome kit, consisting of a 25 percent off coupon for a Toyota Prius, and a Starbucks gift card, in four to six weeks ;-)

When I put together my current home PC I spent a huge amount of time researching the individual parts and then finding someplace I could buy them.

Today I have different priorities. The next PC I buy is going to be a laptop, which makes the DIY path impractical. I have both a PS3 and a Wii so it doesn't need to have the latest & greatest GPU. A Macbook Pro would be an option (if only to dump Windows) if it wasn't twice the price of the Dell.

But most importantly, I don't have a pressing need to buy one today. So I can wait and see what comes down the pipe.
