Slate's article, Why is Prostitution Illegal, doesn't really answer the question all that well. Like most works of journalism, it describes a problem in great detail, and some possible forces that would solve it, but leave its audience completely powerless to actually bring about the change it's suggesting. It doesn't name the actual force that created prostitution laws, nor the force that keeps them from being repealed. Perhaps the author thinks they're too obvious to be worth mentioning.
