So how come when I don't own Apple stock, he announces the iPhone, but when I do own Apple stock, he announces a laptop that's twice as expensive but slower and has no CD-ROM drive, and you can't buy your own battery for it, even if it is really thin.

But if Steve Jobs says that people will pay a $700 premium for a super-thin laptop, maybe they will.

Come to think of it Apple is pretty good at doing things "too soon", the semi-bleeding edge, that can set the tone for the industry.

Like, this whole lack of optical drive and ethernet plug, relying all on wireless, reminds me a bit of the iMacs not having a floppy (or a writable CD)

It's funny, in retrospect I saw a hint of this in a coworkers iPod Touch; it was startlingly thin, shaving off a bit from the already modest iPhone.

And the price point isn't really in rich douchebag territory; < $2K is not terrible for a good laptop.

I still don't like OSX that much...

<$2K is probably good for a working man, but students are going to stick with the MacBook.

Well, students who are paying their own way.

For students whose folks have money, or have a lot of scholarships, sometimes the start of college is a chance to go high end.. you want something that lasts for 4 years or so, and what's another $2000 when you're in it for > $100K...

It's $2000 you'll be owing Fanny Mae down the line.

In short, IT'S THINKING LIKE THAT THAT CAUSED THE MORTGAGE CRISIS! heheh
