The latest XKCD (#351) was cryptic to me, so I looked up "rickroll". Long story short: someone anonymously posted a link that said it went to Grand Theft Auto 4 gameplay footage, but really went to a Rick Astley music video. This became a running joke, and a common way in which to troll people.

I must say that this is downright refreshing, after so many years of goatse and tubgirl and Rule 34.

the only negative side is, like, where the animated gif board on 4chan went through a phase of bait and switch w/ that (one frame something sexy, the rest him dancing) but then there was a homphobic "haha you're gay" element.

Still, charmingly middle school-ish relative to what the internet has had to offer, as you point out.
