New theory for 2007
Nov. 20th, 2007 10:25 am"Cheesy is the new edgy".
OK, Comedy Central, we get it. Pile enough sex, gore, and racial stereotypes in a show and scores of frat boys will buy the DVD of whatever lame show you're producing. The movie industry is sure following your lead, since every comedy that's trying to get me to see it is boasting about how R-rated they are in their press.
OK, horror movies, we get it. For $10 we can watch young people being tortured for two hours in a way that would have been unimaginable two years ago, and will be considered tame two years from how, when "Hostel vs Saw" comes out.
OK, Internet, we get it. Japan has a lot of perverts in it. And our favorite childhood cartoon characters are being drawn in adult situations by lonely people. Oh, you tricked someone else into looking at goatse again. You must be so proud of yourself. Bet the readers of that typography forum never saw it coming.
Is it any wonder we're so enchanted with YouTube and its skateboarding dogs and overflowing Diet Coke bottles? And how come Homestar Runner has any viewers over the age of 12?
"Chocolate Rain" has a lot of lines in it that are definitely about various deadly-serious aspects of the issue of racism in America, though the complete message is a little more elusive than that. But the song itself, by Tay Zonday's own admission, is cheesy. It's SO DAMN CHEESY. And everyone knows that song. I downloaded it and put it on my iPod.
That, my friends, is the future. Adding a pleasant cheese coating to make things easier to digest, not more difficult.

Date: 2007-11-20 07:19 pm (UTC)I'd found a link to some typography forum where they were asking what it would look like if Internet acronyms had become ligatures or punctuation, like the ampersand. And there were some clever ones. Then someone posted tubgirl, and it hadn't been deleted by the time I saw the thread.
