This weekend, I completely reframed the way I look at advertising.

Now, every ad I hear for weight loss or real estate riches, I see in my mind some poor schlub with nothing, and some marketer slamming them against the wall and shaking them down.

I while back I stopped looking at the weekly flyers as items on sale and more as pure demand generation advertising. Yes, I may spend more money than I would by not buying stuff on sale, but I'll save even more money by not buying stuff I for which don't have an immediate need.

hey, that's kind of the whole point of woot.com!

though you gotta admit, $80 for a 30GB Zune is a sweet deal.

Ding ding ding! You should be skeptical more often. :)

(I read your original post that inspired this. Don't know if you got my reply, but yeah, there are a lot of bad people making a lot of money off of good people.)

Also, having a $9K medical bill made me step back and look at how much I was spending on feel-good lifestyle stuff -- did I really need four kinds of lotion? A bottle of wine every week? Trips to World Market? The answer is no.

It's amazing how much happiness people think they can buy.

I've been guilty of a lot of comfort spending this year. I got a big TV, a Wii, took two vacations, and eat out all the damn time. And I was going to buy a Mac as soon as Leopard came out, though I'm thinking that could help my career in the long run.

Or I could just download Ubuntu and pretend that's my computer.

And all that's on top of the bioptic glasses.
