There was a movie called "The Heavenly Kid", a movie I watched over and over on VHS tapes back when I was too young to comprehend the connection between sex and pregnancy. In it, some high school kid in the 1960's has some kind of race against some rival, which is apparently what guys did whenever one girl slept with two different guys. It consists of two cars racing as fast as they can to the end of a cliff. The first person to ditch the car is the chicken, the second person wins whatever prestige you get. Both cars fly off the cliff and are destroyed, apparently as a matter of routine. But the first kid's door malfunctions, and he plunges over the car to his death.

He dies, goes to "midtown" (purgatory as represented by a long subway ride), and is returned to Earth in the 1980's as a ghost, assigned to earn his own way into heaven by guiding a young loser into manhood. He buys the kid new clothes, uses his supernatural powers to build him a shiny red car from a junkyard, and the kid bangs the blonde he had a crush on all these years. The guy she used to be banging gets jealous, and guess what? In the 1980's, whenever one girl sleeps with two different guys, they have a race off a cliff. The same thing happens, but the 80's kid is rescued by the ghost.

I suddenly started thinking about this today, and couldn't stop, because I just realize that four cars were destroyed in the course of the movie. Are there really enough disposable cars floating around a town to hold death races whenever a girl sleeps with two different guys and one of them finds out?

I enjoyed that movie, even though it as dumb, and it featured Jane "Malcolm in the Middle's mom" Kaczmarek.

So, like many people, they were enthralled by that one bit in "Rebel Without a Cause."
