As a bit of a Trekkie, I am pained to admit that George Takei is pretty lame in general. When I saw him on the Will Shatner roast, I was ready to write angry letters to my congresspeople over his lameness.
Unfortunately, he wasn't given much material to work with; especially since the writers seemed to decide to avoid any "in jokes". (Which probably wasn't a bad decision; IMHO it would have made it even more lame.)
It will be interesting to see whether he (or big sister) make any future appearances.
However, a license plate is a pretty subtle in joke. (A bigger in joke would be to use NCC-2000.) I was meaning something more like the Mel Gibson / Danny Glover bit in Maverick.
It felt like the set-up for a longer arc. Set-up episodes are always kind of lame. I don't think his run on the show is over quite yet, so I'll wiat to pass judgement.
