For the first time, my bike is locked up outside. I'm fucking sick of carrying it up the stairs, and these tire stains on the carpet are none too flattering.

I've got both wheels and the frame secured to the big curvy-pipe-style bike rack outside my building, with a combination lock.

I notice that I never see bikes locked up at those things. But I also noticed that an adjacent building commonly has an entire family of bikes -- two small and two large -- chained to a tree. So maybe it's safe. I'd still better register it, though.

How long do you think it'll last?

Eep. Is it still there? Use U-locks.

Or better yet, throw down a rug in your place. It'll tie the room together and prevent the tire marks.

If anything, I'll switch to U-locks. Carrying that bike up the stairs is getting tiresome, and won't get any easier once I buy a much-needed basket. And my apartment shrinks considerably when I have a huge bike taking up space.

There's no perfect solution. Especially since the line of sight between my window and the bike rack is obscured by a globe light.

U-locks are ok (I have one) as long as they're on properly. Unfortunately, some of them can be easily taken apart with a bic pen. The square locks (made of the same stuff, but they detach in half and use an actual key) are pretty good, I think.
