Garfield, back in the mid-80s, was great, at least for kids. Even in the early 90s some of the first Garfield cartoon shows were a hoot. It's too bad that it turned into such crap, but it has been crap for a good 10 years, and it's time to move on.
The newspaper where I used to live used something called the "Passion Index" to decide which comics to jettison. It took reader polls just like everyone else, asking about "Favorites" and "Comics you hate." Then it dumped strips that didn't show up on either end, figuring that the "hated" ones were at least thought-provoking, and the ones that got no votes of any kind would be the least-missed overall.
(Plus there's the fact that "Doonesbury" and "Dilbert" and "Boondocks" always turn up high on both lists.)
