drunk upstairs neighbor again

unbibiumMy latest run-in with drunk upstairs neighbor was the scariest yet because, due to some poor planning on my part, we ended up talking IN FRONT OF MY FRONT DOOR.
This is bad because not only it is right next to my neighbor's front door, but because if I didn't play my cards right he might have followed me in my house and I'd have to convince him to leave of his own free will.
I just took time out from this message to try and sneak off to the laundry room and move my clothes to the dryer, and there he was once again, offering me a "12 Monkeys" tape he had rented, which was due Sunday. I respectfully declined, and he said "just pop it in the VCR and let's see if it works." Luckily it ended soon after that, because someone else was walking by and he said something to her and I was able to dart a little ways off to a distance that said loud and clear "the conversation has somehow ended."
He is clingy awkwardness incarnate. And probably a good reason I should learn to do my laundry EARLY in the evening. When it's 11:00, I'm just scrambling to get a load of wash done with a minimum of fuss so that I can get the dry clothes in my apartment and I can go to bed. But, if he sees me, it's an hour of "dude, don't let your albinism make you think you're a bad person," and "look at my scars" and "I have a book I want you to have" and "I just sold my house" and "I was a martial arts expert" and "I thought you said you were going to Oregon" and the fifty handshakes and stuff like that.
So how would you get out of talking to a guy like this?
I guess I feel sorry for people like that, so I don't want to be rough on them. The needy, lonely, clingy people. How do you deal with people like that?
