The letter G was invented by a man named Spurius Carvilius Ruga. Maybe so he could spell his own name better.

(The Romans had previous used the letter C for the purpose, but they also used that to represent the K sound. This is because they inherited it from people who had no hard G sound in their language and had stopped using C for that, as had been done by the people they got it from.)
