The Cyrillic alphabet is based on the Greek alphabet, which explains why their equivalent of an R is a Р, among other things.

It does not explain why their equivalent of an I, a letter which exists in both Latin and Greek, is a И. Nor why their equivalent of an N is a Н. Neither the English H nor the Greek Eta sound anything like an N.

They probably feel the same way about our P.

my next alphabet will be Korean. Look forward to it!

Everything I've read about Hangul suggests to me that it may be the single most logically constructed alphabet in the world. Were it not designed to look kind of like Chinese characters, it would be the sort of thing you'd expect to come out of an 18th-century European salon as an exercise in Rational Language.

This is somewhat mitigated by the fact that in Korea, if you want to look like an educated brainy person, you have to mix those crazy Chinese-derived hanja in with your hangul, and the higher you go in the educational system the more you're expected to use in scholarly writing.
