Why do I learn to cook, often risking life and limb?

To impress people? Partially. But mostly to reduce my dependence on restaurants.

I usually recall a time I was out with [livejournal.com profile] w_b_yeats at a McDonald's many years ago. I ordered a spicy chicken sandwich, which was their 99ยข sandwich of the month, and I told the cashier to "make it a combo", and paid the cashier about $3 plus tax, to WB's protest. And as we sat down, he told me, "you do realize you just paid $2.00 for fries and a soda, right?"

At that point, I already knew that fountain soda was cheaper than the cup it was served in, but I didn't yet know that potatoes were the one of the cheapest food substances on planet Earth. Upon learning that, I realized why so many places were letting you super-size your potatoes and sugar water for 50 cents.

The way I see it, how hard can it be to make my own crappy food at home? Certainly cheaper, and I'll eat better.

And making my own tacos from scratch, well, that'll be one of my better triumphs. For one, Taco Bell makes many people sick, and they don't even have fish tacos that I'm aware of. Also, while most pubs serve great tacos of their own, they're quite expensive. And if Taco Bell can make a taco for 79 cents, imagine how little it'll cost me once I have it down to a science.
