unbibiumIt's been a long time since I heard a funny answering machine message.
I've heard drunkish giggly ones and ones with rap music blasting in the background, but it's been a long time since anyone attempted to use the answering machine to vector wit, at least in my social circles.
There are two recent exceptions: mine and my father's.
Before I moved, my answering machine was a pretty straight message, except for a five-second pause between the sixth and seventh numbers.
My father's current work phone number is also a straight message, but he takes a beat between "Hello" and "You've reached the voice mail of..." Long enough that you start to talk, but short enough that you feel like you should have known it was his voice mail.
Isolated subtlety like this is perhaps a good compromise, as that tape where they sing "Nobody's home!" to Beethoven's Fifth used to be fucking omnipresent.
