Feb. 4th, 2021 08:35 pmi think ben shapiro is inceptioning me.
so like over the weekend, Philosophy Tube put out a video where the host came out as trans, has actually been hiding her transition from YouTube for months, nailed her debut, and also had a heartwarming sendoff for the character she had been playing up to now, which seemed to include tacit permission to keep sharing the old videos, which was important to me because I consider there to be some important wisdom in all that content.
Of course, I consider PT in a triad of leftist YouTube channels that includes Contrapoints and hbomberguy... but now two out of three of them have transitioned, and I guess a few derps on Twitter joked about whether the third will.
So a few nights ago I had a dream where I was just in some informal classroom setting where hbomberguy was just hanging out on a couch, and didn't look any different, and I called him "he", and the teacher told me in that grade school sing-songy voice that I did a no-no and had to fill out an apology form. hbomberguy didn't react at all.
so I woke up and like, did Ben Shapiro sneak into my room with one of those dream briefcases from Inception? because that's kind of the narrative of "secret trans pronouns headshotting you from 100 yards away" that I used to hear from right-wingers back when I was "giving them a chance" for 40 years in a row.
Up to now I've not had much trouble accommodating trans people's identities, but that may be because I've been lucky to meet them all post-transition so I didn't have to re-index anyone's name or memories, and so I didn't make any mistakes. and these were all in social situations, so mistakes would have had no formal consequences. Gender hardly comes up when you have better things to do anyway.
but now I'm kind of wondering if some gender-based landmine is in my future...
Of course if given the choice, I'd rather spend six months in pronoun re-education camp ten years down the line, than let the TERFs win. But be real, that's not what anyone wants, is it? Who's actually champing at the bit to catch the cis-hets in a flub? Certainly not the trans people I've met. but without going into detail, I've interacted with some allies out there who act a little bit like the SJWs the right has been using as bogeymen. how often are they doing more good than harm when they over-correct someone?
I think I want my conduct to reflect the reality that people don't get to dictate other people's identities, while not lending any credence to conservative scare narratives...
and philosophy tube's Why Does Britain Still Have a Royal Family is too funny to not share all the time forever. i'm sure it'll be superseded eventually though
