Feb. 14th, 2010 01:10 pmWell, it's time to be thankful for what I have.
I have a job in a down economy–indeed, a job where I can earn an honest living, which is even rarer. My only major debt is a student loan, and I have a nice two-bedroom apartment.
While I may not have a lot of friends, I still have some. If I don't see them a lot, it's mainly because I'm not picking up the phone as often as I should. They're willing to help me out whenever I ask, though I'm usually too proud to ask.
What's more, so many people at my age carry baggage of debt and divorce, or worse, they're underwater on a house they no longer want to live in, or in a marriage they don't want anymore. I've avoided all that.
And even though I live in a sprawly mess of a city, I am ideally located. I'm a five-minute walk from work. I'm a fifteen-minute bike ride from Mill Avenue to the southwest, Tempe Marketplace to the southeast, Papago Park to the west, and Old Town Scottsdale to the north. There's a secular humanists group that meets every month at the HomeTown Buffet right across the street. RHPS happens every month on Mill Avenue, and the Denny's they eat at afterwards is halfway between the theater and my apartment. And my friend's weekly open mic performance is at a bar that's just a mile away. Truly, if anyone is getting away with car-free living in Phoenix, it is me.
