So I bought some Atari stuff on eBay for $52. And I paid the guy with PayPal; with shipping it came to $77.
Then I get the money refunded, and he sends me a request for payment, also through PayPal, for $68, with this message: "please accept request for payment i have given you a discount. paypal has been giving me issues and if i do it the regualr way they are holding the finds and i can shiped the item out because i dont have the money to send it.- i will provide you tracking info asap" .
This was two days ago, and he's sent me his phone number and wants me to call. I've asked eBay security for advice, and haven't gotten a response yet. It sounds a lot like something eBay has been vehemently warning me against, especially at the top of any "Message from Seller" email. But that could be because eBay collects its fees through the automatic PayPal link. But he's still going through PayPal, so I wonder if my purchase is still protected.
On the one hand, it seems like if you were to defraud someone, you'd do it for more than $68. On the other hand, this guy has a feedback rating of 1, and only 1. On the other other hand, my own feedback rating is only 6, because I haven't sold very much through it. Also, his eBay name and Yahoo email address reference completely different first names, but that's pretty common.
Any advice?
