There was a Full House episode where one of the kids stowed away on a plane, and the joke was that they thought they were flying to Oakland.
One of the kids threw this bone to those of us who didn't live in San Francisco: "Gee, that's just across the bay. I wonder why they don't drive?"
And then it turns out they were going to Auckland, New Zealand. Hilarity ensued.
I probably would have picked up that Auckland was in New Zealand eventually, but I don't follow the events of northern California closely enough to pick up the relative locations of Oakland and San Francisco.
This is probably why some people get so mad when TV shows and movies get little things wrong. We think it might cause someone to walk around with a bad fact in their head.
But getting stuff wrong is unavoidable. New TV shows will be written by people educated largely on old TV shows. So I'm waiting to see a Pong machine in a World War II movie. I've already seen a Ms. Pac-Man machine in a movie set in the 70's, so I think maybe by 2015.
