Uniforms

I was watching Trekkies again, because TiVo keeps recording it...

I realized there's something strange about declaring oneself a Starfleet officer. It's something you can get away with only because there is no Starfleet, and therefore it's understood that your rank is really an affiliation with a fan club.

I can draw two parallels in society.

The first is Civil War re-enactment enthusiasts. They take on the ranks of people who actually lived, in order to honor them. But I've never heard of someone attending school or work in their Civil War uniform.

The second, creepier connection is the trend of people pretending to be Navy SEALs. This has proven to be such a problem that there is a popular website dedicated to outing fake SEALs. Far from honoring the people they impersonate, they are seen as walking insults.

Of these three groups, I wonder which has a higher probability that a given member has actually served in the military?
