Memories of the idiot box.
Nov. 28th, 2004 10:03 pmChannel 15 used to be such an awesome station before it became a "real" channel. In the late 80's they became a Fox affiliate, but that was only on Sunday nights. The rest of the time, they had all the good syndicated shows like Star Trek: The Next Generation, and all the shitty ones that I watched anyway, like Charles in Charge. Instead of news, they'd show Family Ties reruns. One summer they had original Star Trek every weeknight at 10:00, so I got to catch up that way. And Wednesday nights, they'd show some neat movie from the 80's.
Then in 1994, for some inconceivable reason, all the TV stations in Phoenix changed their networks. Channel 15 was suddenly ABC instead of FOX, which was OK because Fox had become a full-time network and had started spreading the suck on pretty thick. And they started producing a news program, which I remember as being pretty cool at first. But then everything that made Channel 15 unique started to break down.
Now it's just another shitty ABC affiliate, with a sensationalist news crew, and car dealership infomercials every weekend. I know this because TiVo often mistakes one of those infomercials for Ebert & Roeper.
Maybe TV sucks more now. Maybe TV always sucked, but in small enough quantities that it was easier for the cream to rise to the top. Maybe I'm just too old now to identify with a local television station. Maybe owning a TiVo has taught me that most of what I enjoyed about watching TV, was knowing that the commercial break was over.
