Apr. 13th, 2004 04:45 pmI've been reading up on rules-light RPG's like SHERPA, with its business-card character sheets and use of a digital stopwatch as a d10, and FUDGE, which seems to be more of a rules construction kit than a rules system in and of itself.
Of course, reading up on these systems tells me nothing of what they're like to play. So one of these days I'm going to have to seek out people running these games.
I was watching poker on TV recently, and realized that poker is just like a complicated RPG combat system, in which the cards are dice, while the chips are stats. I'm probably not the first to make that comparison.
And I wondered if there were any RPG combat systems that used cards instead of dice. Then I remembered Magic: the Gathering, and Yu-Gi-Oh, and Pokemon, and the other card-battle games. I wondered, though, if there are any RPGs that use standard Western playing cards, and then I found CARDS RPG... on Geocities.
When I have time, I'll need to read more about mechanics...
