Tokyo, night 1.
Oct. 23rd, 2003 09:11 pmAs I stepped out of the train station onto the streets of Tokyo for the first time, I saw lots of tall buildings with neon and billboards and kana and thought "wow".
Hajime said "This is nothing."
The hotel staff here are excellent. They had some trouble giving directions to Hajime in Japanese, but this one clerk's English is spectacular. I told her that I needed a curtain for my room so the sun wouldn't come in, and asked if they could nail an extra sheet up there or something. She said she'd use some big towels, because a sheet would be "too shear". I don't think I ever bothered to learn the word "shear" in any other language, or for that matter anything related to an object's light transmission properties.
I am beat from the flight and all the airport stuff I had to go through today, so I'm going to crash. I'll probably be awake early tomorrow, and if so, I'll be off to the fish market. If I don't get lost.
